Jersey to Host Women’s T20 World Cup Pathway Event

Jersey have been chosen as the host nation for the first ever ICC Women’s T20 World Cup European Division 2 qualifier. The expansion of the qualifying process has opened up an opportunity for 6 teams to battle it out for promotion into Division 1 and ultimately a place at the Women’s T20 World Cup in Bangladesh in 2024.

The tournament, to be held from 27th May – 3rd June, will see hosts Jersey take on their counterparts from Germany, France, Sweden, Italy and Turkey in a single round robin format. The top 2 teams will be promoted to European Division 1 in Spain in September against the Netherlands and Scotland.

Female cricket in Jersey has been on the up over the past 3 years due to a renewed focus on building a sustainable pathway for junior players into international cricket. The appointments of a full time Women’s Head Coach in 2020 and a Performance & Development Officer for Girls & Women’s cricket in 2022 have provided the support needed to meet the targets set out by the board.

Jersey Cricket will also have its first female Chief Executive Officer, Sarah Gomersall, starting her post in February at a time when both the men’s and women’s national teams will be chasing further success. As well as the above, Jersey will also be involved in ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Europe Qualifier from 20th-28th July in Scotland and the U19’s will travel to the Netherlands for a place at the U19’s World Cup in August.

On hosting the Women’s event, she stated, “it’s brilliant that one of my first tasks as CEO is to announce that we are hosting the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Europe Qualifier in May. What a year ahead for Jersey Cricket across the board”.

“Our focus in the short term is to increase the visibility of the female game in Jersey and having 15 games of international cricket will do just that. We hope to see great support from the local community throughout the week to get behind our girls”.
